I am at work on a memoir set largely in Alabama during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. It tells the story of my Irish Catholic parents—an ordained priest and a Sister of Mercy—who were sent by the Church from Ireland to Alabama in the 1960s, where they fell in love and became involved in the era’s defining struggles over segregation, conscience and institutional power. Galvanized by the progressive reforms of Vatican II, they faced retaliation from church authorities and the Ku Klux Klan before leaving the Catholic Church and building a life centered on social justice, poetry and literature in Birmingham. Much of my work returns to questions of inheritance, exile, queerness, faith and what it means to belong.
